Two Couples (and Two Presidents) Partner up Through Annual All-American Dream

New Zealanders Tom Hill and Sunita Raj say that the love story between them began on a plane in India almost three decades ago.

They’ve been together for 33 years, and Raj is a distant cousin of President Trump.

“We love people from different countries,” Hill told Fox News. “Whether it’s from New Zealand, India, or the United States of America, we love people from different countries.”

Hill and Raj met on a plane in 1980 while on vacation in India, and after some initial crisscrossing of the globe, decided to settle down in New Zealand.

After visiting family in Mumbai, Raj came to New Zealand, and married Hill. They have two children and live in Auckland.

“Sunita was always very, very excited to visit the United States and to come to the United States of America,” Hill said. “She loved New York City, New York, and she wanted to make that dream a reality.”

Ten years ago, Hill was traveling in Central America, when a photo on the plane caught his eye. It was an immigration photograph of a 15-year-old girl waiting for a bus in northern India. That photo prompted him to take Raj to the U.S.

“Sunita was a part of a [Baby-Friendly World] initiative, she worked at the U.S. Consulate in Delhi,” Hill said. “She was there when we first came here.”

According to Hill, Raj and her mother were first brought into the U.S. in 1992. They were granted a green card the same year, when they were 23 and 23 years old.

When Raj married Hill in 2001, she became a citizen of the U.S. and the U.S. of America.

“I think it’s the American dream,” Hill said. “That’s what I love about the U.S. of America. That’s what I’ve always felt like. That is the city that’s always been an active city. I love a city that’s a living city.”

But their relationship wasn’t always all about the big city — Raj spent years of childhood years in New Zealand.

“From a very young age, Sunita was a New Zealander and a Kiwi,” Hill said. “She has been living here since she was 20, 21. I just got to know her and fall in love with her. I found her through The Little Fairies years ago.”

The best piece of advice Hill had for any American couple is to take the time to get to know each other.

“Honestly, if you don’t know your partner’s family background or background, all you’re doing is a big test on your relationship and what kind of a person you’re going to be with and hopefully you’ll meet your match.”

With the arrival of the Charlie Brown Halloween costume meme, Hill recently made a jump from flying miles, half the world away, to flying through the streets of Washington, D.C.

“Do you have, I can walk,” Raj asked him on camera before Hill crashed the party in Washington, D.C.

And not surprisingly, he was in for quite the treat.

“We flew on the same plane,” Hill said. “The flight attendant, he was really sweet to me. He got to know us well when we landed, and he just so happened to be there when we got off the plane.”
